Falafel is a delicious and popular Arabic dish made from ground chickpeas or fava beans. It is typically served as a vegetarian or vegan alternative to meat, and can be enjoyed in a sandwich, wrap, or as part of a salad. Here is a traditional Arabic recipe for falafel:
Ingredients:
2 cups dried chickpeas, soaked overnight in water
1 small onion, chopped
3 cloves of garlic, minced
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Salt and pepper, to taste
Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions:
1 .Drain the soaked chickpeas and rinse them well. Place them in a food processor along with the chopped onion, minced garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
2 .Pulse the mixture until it is well combined, but still a little coarse. Be careful not to over-process it, as this can make the falafel too dense.
3 .Transfer the mixture to a bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the mixture to firm up.
4 .Once the mixture has chilled, use your hands to form it into small balls, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
5 .Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the falafel balls to the skillet, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
6 .Fry the falafel balls for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
7 .Use a slotted spoon to remove the falafel from the skillet and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain off any excess oil.
8 .Serve the falafel hot, with tahini sauce, hummus, or your favorite dipping sauce.
